Dabbling Has Begun!
Hey everyone! I am using this forum to document my own journey on this new and scary adventure of coding. I am not yet sure where this blog will take me or how I will use it, but, for right now, I am thinking of it as my own personal diary.
First, I would like to give a huge shoutout to ALL the amazing free resources that are out there to learn how to code! Currently, I am doing the following:
* I am about 20% of the way through their program. I have learned how to use HTML and CSS to change code for pictures, images, and some basic websites. Honestly, it is SUPER interactive and easy to follow. Plus, the progress bar makes you feel amazing for completing basic steps. If you have issues with the problems or need help, they have fantastic videos to follow. I am about to start their Applied Visual Design section!
2) AppAcademy: Free Coding Camp
* AppAcademy (which has amazing reviews for their coding camp) has their ENTIRE bootcampe FOR FREE ONLINE. Yes, I repeat, THEIR ENTIRE BOOTCAMP THAT YOU PAY FOR FOR FREE ONLINE. Ok, so for this one, I am not going to lie to you, I am not the best at completing the modules. I discovered this before Freecodecamp and honestly, the problems get a bit tough, so I have taken a break while I work through Freecodecamp to understand more of the basics. However, for those who are great self-starters or know more about coding, this is an AMAZING resource.
3) Harvard CS50 Class: Lecture 0
* Apparently this class has a cult like following, and I can see why! The instructor is highly engaging and has broken down complicated material into steps that anyone can follow. Honestly, I have had to replay certain parts of the video to understand the concepts, but I have not been bored or wanted to scroll on my phone. I have broken the video into 45 minute chunks, so I am wrapping up the last of the lecture today (1/11) and starting the homework. The homework uses the MIT program Scratch which is like a play based Coding program, similar to ones our students use to practice coding at school.
4) NuCamp: Basics - starting 1/31
* Lastly, I signed up for NuCamp's "Basic Web Developments" class. Personally, I learn better when I have someone teaching me content, so the hybrid format of online learning and live virtual classes will work best for me. Once I take the basic bootcamp, I am a bit torn between their Back-end Development course or participating in another bootcamp. Fortunately, their costs are VERY economical and low and their instructors have great reviews! I will let you know how it goes!
Has anyone completed a bootcamp with NuCamp or other companies? What were your biggest takeaways? Job Placement? Languages Learned? Let me know!
